Uncaged
Today I wish I were a bird,
soaring above all that is sorrowful
Untouched by the cruelty that simmers below me,
peaceful in the solace of the clouds
I would see what is unseen,
that which is missed by those without flight
Tree tops personified in a dance
to the music of nature's wrath
The miracle of the rainbow's edge
as it knocks on the door to heaven
I would chase a drop from a waterfall
to the cemetery of an unknown sea
Or befriend a beast, believed nonexistent,
at home where no man has walked.
And when I grew tired I would seek refuge in the cool grass
I would wrap my breast with wings, and wait
I might remain a bird and fly away
with still wings and a quiet heart
Or wake to find I am yesterday's child,
a caged soul who, when tomorrow comes,
would wish to be a bird.
